"Oh! Good morning," I greet Sephtis as I enter the kitchen. I'm surprised he's already up and about--considering he didn't seem to be doing all too well yesterday.

"Morning," He mumbles from the kitchen counter, turning to me, and smiling a little sadly.

I start towards him for a kiss, but he quickly nods to the table before I can reach him.

"I made breakfast."

I arch an eyebrow, and he lets out a small laugh. “And, no. I did not catch anything. I heard you the first time.”

I turn to see a plate filled with a stack of pancakes and a garnishing of fresh fruit, and a glass of orange juice.

"You made all this?" I ask, surprised.

He nods. "I'm no chef, but I might have picked up something from your cooking shows. Sit down and I'll grab you some coffee."

I can't help but smile, as I take a seat at the breakfast table. "You're spoiling me."

"It's the least I can do. It makes me happy to provide for you." He says, not looking at me. I don't bother asking if he slept well, it's obvious he hadn't. He doesn't look good, but he looks better than he did last night. That doesn't mean he's recovered though. He's obviously still fighting something. Weariness is written all over his features, I can see the dark circles under his eyes.

I drizzle syrup onto a pancake and cut a triangle out of it, then try it, it's so warm, surprisingly fluffy, and melts in my mouth. "Seph, these are delicious!"

"Good. You deserve it." He pours steaming coffee from a carafe into my mug and sets it beside me.

"H-how are you feeling today? Did you sleep at all?" I venture, tentative, as I stir a sugar cube into my coffee.

He looks me in the eye. "I'll survive, Amata. Do not worry your pretty little head."

He looks up and gives me a quick smile, and I'm relieved that it's genuine, but I can't help but notice his fangs are longer than normal.

His eyes are darker than usual, his mannerisms more guarded. Yesterday he went to bed after barely uttering a goodnight, and today he appeared physically better (slightly), but he clearly isn't mentally.

He seems to have noticed me noticing. His gaze grows darker, more intense. He swiftly returns to the kitchen to retrieve a mug of his own.

I can feel my face heating up at the thought that my gaze had been too obvious. I look away from him.

Something happened last night.

I can feel it in the way he holds me at a distance. It has to do with our moment of passion. I know it. I feel it like a hole, a gaping hole in the center of my chest. I feel it in my heart. I don't know how to process it, or what to do about it; I just know that I don't like it. It hurts.

I wonder if I did something wrong?

I’ve been trying to be mindful of giving him the space he needs. I twist in my chair and glance at the clock on the wall, I'm running late.
